1999-2004 Mustang UPR Drive Shaft Loop Install

Install Summary

The following article covers the install of the UPR 2 piece Drive shaft Loop (see figure 1) on a 2004 Ford Mustang. This is the first time installing this design on a Mustang. In the past I’ve used the Lakewood 4 piece design and this 2 piece set up is so much easier to work with.

To get started remove both passenger and driver side seats as you have to have access to the floor under the carpet. Also remove the small plastic kick panel and threshold panels on both sides along the doors (see figure 2). Next jack up the front of the car and place jack stands under it so you have room to work under the car near the front of the drive shaft.

Slide the long flat piece between the exhaust and floor boards then put the top loop in around the drive shaft and bolt the two pieces together (see figure 3). Current 2008 NHRA rules state the drive shaft loop has to be within 6” of the front U joint. If you move the assembled piece right to around the 6” distance from the front U joint you will see on the driver side floor there is a perfect flat spot to mount the loop (see figure 4). Center it so that the no part of the assembly is hitting the drive shaft and hold it in place and mark the holes (see figure 5). Do the same on the passenger side floor although it’s not as flat as the driver side (see figure 6).

Before drilling the holes I used what I had in the garage to hold the carpet and wiring up off the floor near the area I was drilling (see figure 7). Slide the drive shaft loop assembly forward and use a drill with a 3/8” drill bit drill out the eight holes in the floor to mount the loop. Slide the drive shaft loop back into place and using the provided grade 8 hardware tighten up the nuts/bolts (see figure 8, 9).

Once the hardware holding the drive shaft loop to the floor is done go back and retighten the nuts/bolts holding the two pieces of the loop together (see figure 10). After you are done get the car back on the ground and reinstall the interior trim pieces along the floor and the seats.
